Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which has twelve months. It is a holy time of the year for Muslims who fast from dawn until dusk. During Ramadan, fasting means not eating or drinking anything, even water. Prayers are said standing up all night long. During the holy month, most people read the whole Quran, from beginning to end, either as a group during night prayer or on their own.
Also, the time to break the fast, which is usually called “iftar,” is a social event. When it’s time to break the fast, family, friends, and neighbors get together at home or a local mosque. A big part of the Ramadan tradition, especially at the end of Ramadan, is having guests over and being friendly. Eid al-Fitr, or the Festival of Breaking the Fast, marks the end of Ramadan.
